all-state-2016 Robinson Places Two in the All State Band

Kaylah Williamson, and Haley Winkleman have earned spots in the Texas All State Band! Kaylah is a junior Oboe player and Haley is a junior Clarinet player. Alexis Thorburn, freshman Contra Bass and Austin Vetter, senior Tuba were both first alternates, barely missing All State.

Band students from four music regions met at Robinson HS for All-State Band tryouts. The students had previously qualified for the contest at their respective All-Region tryouts held in December. At the four different Regions, over two thousand (2,000) students had been entered in the first level of competition. Three hundred seventy (370) were certified to compete at RHS. At the tryouts, only fifty four (54) were certified on to All-State.

To make the All-State band, a student must perform seven major scales, the chromatic scale, and two very difficult etudes (songs). A panel of five judges, who can not see the students, listen to the students individually and then rank them in “chair” order. The top students in each group are certified to the All-State Band. Kaylah and Haley each earned a position in the prestigious organization. Kaylah, was First Chair in her respective section, leaving no doubt she was All State!

Band Director Bob Vetter stated, “We are proud of these young ladies for this tremendous achievement. They practiced many long and hard hours. All-State is the pinnacle of success for a band student! Congratulations to these fantastic young musicians!” Vetter continued with, “Almost ten thousand students across the state of Texas began their quest for All-State. There are now two hundred and ninety All-State Band Students in class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A and we have two of them!” He concluded with, “I want to thank our band staff for their help in getting these young people ready.”  The Robinson staff includes: Jose Sanchez, Krystal Michal, Robin Williamson, Steve Williamson, Ivan Hernandez and our student teacher, Jake Hale.

Also participating at the tryouts were Courtney Wood, Flute; Seth Randolph, Trumpet;  Madi Reid, Trombone; Abby Roque and Emily Carr, Baritone and Spencer Allen, Percussion.

The All-State Bands are sponsored by the Association of Texas Small School Bands.  The bands will meet next month in San Antonio. All-State Band members from across the state, will rehearse for three days and present a concert on Saturday, February 13. The concert will be in downtown San Antonio at the Convention Center in the Lila Cockrell Theater.
