Robinson Tennis Finishes in 3rd Place in Area Tournament

The Rocket varsity tennis team faced two familiar 17AAAA foes in the Area Team Tennis Tournament and came away with 3rd place in the tournament.  A rematch with the China Spring Cougars in the semifinals ended in a 7-10 loss, putting the Rockets into a contest against the Gatesville Hornets for 3rd-place.  The RHS team rebounded from the China Spring loss and won easily 10-3.

“China Spring played a well as I’ve ever seen them play” says RHS coach, Jack Gregory.  “Their program has shown great improvement this year and they just simply outplayed us today.  They were able to close some really tight matches and we just couldn’t seem to finish the match when we had a chance to win.”

vs CHINA SPRING:  Highlights for the Rockets in doubles included a strong 6-1, 7-5 win at #1 boys doubles by Kerry Carriveau/Casey Voss.  Noah Wingate paired with Megan Litton in dominating the mixed doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 score.  Also Susie Malone/Courtney Wood roared back from a 2-6 first set loss, to win in split sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Wingate followed his doubles win with another solid victory in #1 boys’ singles 6-1, 6-0.  Voss survived a 1st set tiebreak and responded with a strong 2nd set to win the #2 line 7-6(5), 6-3.

Seniors Carriveau and Diller took their #3 and #4 matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 respectively.

Paige Randolph won an extra match, 6-0, 6-0, that did not count in the final score.

vs GATESVILLE:  Almost the entire squad contributed to the highlights in the 3rd place match vs Gatesville.  The boys were a perfect 9-0 in their matches vs the Hornets.  The girls’ team wasn’t far behind with wins in 5 of 9 matches plus another win in mixed doubles.

Wingate led the way for the team with 6-0, 6-0 wins in both singles and mixed doubles.  Litton shared in the shut-out win as Wingate’s mixed doubles partner.

Carriveau/Voss also took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 doubles.  Fox/Qualls came close to a shut-out at #1 girls’ doubles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.  Also contributing with doubles wins were Diller/Hale (6-1, 6-2) and Herring/East (6-4, 6-2) at #2 and #3 boys’ doubles respectively.

In other singles action Voss, Carriveau and Diller each won easily.  Jacob Taylor moved into the line-up to play #5 and had a great 6-1. 6-2 win.  Also playing up in the line-up was Blake Stout at #6.  Stout won in a split set match after losing the first set.  His final score was 4-6, 6- (10-8).

For the RHS girls, Litton, Qualls and Fox swept the top three slots in the lineup.  Fox came from a set down to claw out a 2-6, 6-3 (10-8) win at #3.  The final win for the Rockets was a 6-2, 7-5 match from Amanda Alsip at the #5 position.
