Three Rocket Tennis Players Advance to UIL State Tournament

Wingate, K. Hill-Johnson & Kramer Earn First Trip to State

Second place finishes in boys’ singles and girls’ doubles at the Region III 3A Tennis Tournament in Bryan propelled Jacob Wingate, Kayla Hill-Johnson and McKenna Kramer into the UIL 3A State Tournament to be held in College Station on April 29-30.

For seven consecutive years the Rockets were represented in the state tournament, but have only had an alternate (Brenna Miller in 2012) over the past two years. The 2-year drought ended when Wingate completed his final match in the Region III tournament.

Losing in the finals to College Station, Jacob had to “wait out” the completion of the 3rd place match to see whether or not he would have a playback for 2nd place. With no playback necessary, Wingate earned the trip to his first UIL state tournament berth.

Seeded #2 in the regional contest, Wingate opened the tournament with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Houston Scarborough, 23AAA runner-ups, in just over 20 minutes.

The quarterfinals proved to be a more familiar opponent from Mexia, the finalist from 19AAA. The match finished with Jacob securing his spot in the regional semifinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

On day two of the tournament, Wingate would face District 24 champion from Sweeny in the semifinals. Both players would trade momentum back and forth, but Wingate prevailed with a strong 6-4, 6-4 win to take him into the regional finals.

The finals was a rematch with District 18 champion from College Station who was the #1 seed and who had not lost a 3A match all year. Jacob fought point by point throughout the entire match, but lost with a final score of 3-6, 3-6.

Kayla Hill-Johnson and McKenna Kramer came into their 2nd consecutive regional tournament as the #1 overall seed. After a disappointed showing in the finals, the Rocket duo had to produce a win in a playback to secure their first ever trip to the UIL State Tournament.

 2013 Spring JV Schedule

Round 1 pitted the pair against Houston Sterling from District 23. Playing superb tennis, Kayla and McKenna vaulted into the quarterfinals with an overpowering 6-1, 6-0 win.

As with Wingate, the RHS girls faced a much more familiar opponent in the quarterfinals when they squared off against the 19AAA champions from Groesbeck. The pair again produced some of their best tennis and took the match 6-2, 6-1 and earned a place in Tuesday’s semifinals.

District 22 champions from Liberty became the 3rd team to fall to Hill-Johnson/Kramer in the tournament. The match started slowly for the Robinson team, but consistent pressure allowed the Robinson pair to control the match and win 6-4, 6-1.

In the finals, Center’s district champions stood in the way of a trip to state. When the match was finished, Center had pulled out a tough 6-3, 6-3 win and the girls, just like Wingate, had to face the possibility of a playback for 2nd place.

Because of a win by Taylor in the 3rd place match, the playback became a reality. Fighting the emotions of having lost in the finals, Hill-Johnson/Kramer fought through a 3-set battle, eventually winning 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3. The win secured their 2nd place regional finish and their first trip to state.

Also advancing to the semifinal round for the Rockets were Nikki Bright/Eric Bortz. Although they finished out of the medals in 4th place, the doubles team had a tremendous finish to their season.

Although they were seeded #4 in the draw, the RHS pair were 17AAA finalists and had to face another district’s champions in the first round. Groesbeck, winners in 19AAA, stood in their way when the tournament began. Playing inspired tennis, Nikki and Eric fought to a 6-4, 6-3 win in the opening round of the tournament.

Columbia, District 24 champions, was the next hurdle for the RHS boys. In what was probably their very best effort of the year, Bright/Bortz cruised to a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win, sending them into the semifinals on Tuesday.

Their final two matches of the tournament were against the #1 and #2 College Station HS teams from District 18. A 2-6, 1-6 loss to the #1 team and eventual regional champions in the semifinals led to a final match for 3rd place. Their final match of the year was a great match as they lost the first set 0-6 but fought back to even the match 6-3 in the 2nd set. Their season ended as College Station took the 3rd set 6-2.

Also competing in the Regional III Tournament were Kerry Carriveau in boys’ singles, Brianna Docherty in girls’ singles and Savannah Hill-Johnson/Hunter Goolsby in mixed doubles. Although they each lost in the opening round, they gained valuable experience as they look to next year.
