Noah Wingate Takes Singles Title at Ennis

Consolation Title Goes to Amanda Alsip

The Robinson HS varsity tennis team kicked off its 2015 Spring schedule by traveling to Ennis to participate in the Polar Bear Invitational Tournament hosted by Ennis High School.  This tournament gives the Rockets the opportunity to compete against several teams that they normally don’t see during the year.  This year’s lineup included teams from Tyler Lee HS (6A), Waxahachie (5A), Whitehouse (5A), Ennis (5A) along with Groesbeck and Robinson representing 4A.

Freshman Noah Wingate brought home the boys’ singles championship with an outstanding performance.  While winning easily in the quarterfinals and semifinals against good players, Noah saved his best match for the finals against the top seed in the draw.  Facing the top player from Groesbeck in the finals, he had the opportunity to avenge his only loss during the Fall season – a split-set loss in October when the two players first met.  Wingate took early control of the match and never looked back, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory to claim the tournament championship.

Fellow 9th grader Cooper Hale took his first match against Tyler Lee, but fell to the #1 seed from Groesbeck in his quarterfinal match.

In girls’ singles, Amanda Alsip, also a RHS freshman completed her first tournament competition by winning the consolation draw.  Alsip was beaten in her opening match by a player from Waxahachie, but won 3 straight matches including a win over Groesbeck’s top girl in the finals.

RHS did not fare as well in doubles, with no team advancing past the semifinal round.  Kerry Carriveau/Casey Voss had the best result by beating Ennis in the quarterfinals, but they fell in split sets to Groesbeck’s top team in the semis.

Mixed doubles Casey Diller/Megan Litton won an opening round match vs Ennis but lost their 2nd match in the quarterfinals in split sets.
