Rockets Varsity Tennis Team Takes 1st District Win Over Mexia

Robinson and Mexia met for the first 17AAAA UIL team tennis match on September 18 and the Rockets came away with a decisive 18-1 win on their home courts.

The RHS squad jumped to a 7-0 lead with a complete sweep in the doubles portion of the match. With 3 quick singles victories, the Rockets clinched the win 10-0.

Kerry Carriveau/Casey Voss (#1 boys) and Courtney Wood/Amanda Alsip (#3 girls), and Jacob Taylor/Susie Malone (#1 mixed doubles) set the pace with 6-0, 6-0 shutout wins.  John East/Parker Herring (#2) lost only 1 game in their 6-1, 6-0 win.  Also completing the doubles sweep were Caleb Diller/Cooper Hale (#2 boys), Megan Litton/Bailey Qualls (#1 girls) and Taylor Fox/Natalie Cox (#2 girls).

The only loss for the night was a 6-8 setback at #1 girls’ singles after the overall match had been decided.  The next closest contest for the Rockets saw Mexia win only 4 games in the #4 boys’ singles.

Winning their singles matches without losing a single game were Carriveau (#2) and Alsip (#5), both taking 6-0, 6-0 wins.  Blake Stout, Heather Antonelli and Paige Randolph each won 8-0 in extra matches played.

Overall, including all extra matches played, the Rockets won 24  matches and lost only 1.  Their next district match will be vs China Spring at the Robinson HS Tennis Center next THU, September 25.

RHS TENNIS GETS 2ND WIN IN REMATCH WITH COPPERAS COVE

In their first match of the year, the RHS varsity tennis team lost a close 9-10 match against Cove’s #2 varsity.  After playing four matches, the squad faced the Bulldawgs a second time on SAT, September 20.  The second time proved to be magic for the young RHS team as they exacted revenge by winning 11-8 over the Cove squad.

The highlight for the rematch was the dominance by the boys’ squad.  The RHS boys won all 11 matches they played, including a couple of extra matches.

Casey Voss, playing in the #1 singles slot, took the only shutout of the match, winning easily 6-0, 6-0.  At #2 Kerry Carriveau wasn’t far behind in his 6-1, 6-1 victory.  Jacob Taylor and Parker Herring both recovered from a 1st set loss, to come back and win their matches in split sets.

In the girls’ lineup, RHS was missing their #4 player and also had the setback of an injury at the #1 spot.  Because of this, most of the girls’ lineup had to play 2 places higher than they would have normally competed.

Although there were some close matches, only Heather Antonelli could pull out a win at the #5 spot, taking the win in split sets 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.  Amanda Alsip came close but lost her #4 match 6-1, 2-6, 4-6.

Antonelli, playing in her first varsity lineup since moving to Robinson, made the best of her debut by also teaming with Alsip at #3 doubles to get the only RHS win in girls’ doubles 7-6(6), 6-4.
