Robinson Tennis Player State 3-A Runner-Up

After a quick exit in the opening round of the tournament as a junior in 2013, Wingate made sure that he would not be leaving until the entire tournament was over in 2014.

As the #2 entry from Region III, Jacob had to face another region’s top player in the first round.  In his junior year he was defeated by the eventual state champion.  This year, as a senior, he had the hard luck of being paired against the 2013 state runner-up, Bradley Loftis, from Dallas Madison.

“Jacob knew it would not be an easy task, but it was the perfect chance for redemption . . . and he was ready!” said Robinson coach Jack Gregory.  “He’s looked forward to this for a year and wasn’t going to let it slip away like it did last year.”

Using a strong baseline game mixed with a relentless attacking game, Jacob controlled the first set, easily winning 6-2.  The 2nd set was much tougher, but the Robinson star would produce the shot of the tournament leading 6-5 in the 2nd set.

Wingate hit a “tweener” lob that would fly over Loftis and drop for a winner, and he never looked back again.

The shot demoralized Loftis and Jacob closed out the final points to take the match 6-2, 7-5.

The semifinal match was a rematch against Mark Johnson, the Region IV champion from Brownwood, who had defeated Jacob in the fall.  Wingate had to play a different style of match involving much less pace in order to offset Johnson’s power.

Scrambling for shot after shot, Jacob constantly put pressure on Johnson to have to hit another ball.  The pressure resulted in very timely breaks of serve late in both sets and allowed for him to serve out the sets for a 7-5, 6-4 win.

Everything Jacob had worked for since being eliminated in the 2013 state tournament had come true.  He had his chance to compete in the finals of the 2014 state tournament against his regional rival, Nick Bradham from College Station HS.

Even in the split set loss, Jacob won the hearts and support of the huge crowd watching the match from the stands.  After falling 2-6 in the opening set, Wingate fought to a heart pounding 6-4 win in the 2nd set to force a 3rd and deciding set.

Through the quarterfinals and semifinals, Bradham had lost only 1 game in the tournament.  He knew he was in a fight to the finish with Jacob.

The final set saw both players have to fight back from service breaks, but Bradham came through with enough to take a 6-4 set to close out the match.  The 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win for College Station was evidence that the match, literally, could have gone either way.

“Jacob was a warrior today.  In fact, he was a warrior through the entire tournament,” said Gregory.  “I’m so proud of his commitment and effort on the courts, but I’m even more proud of the young man that he is becoming.  We are really going to miss him in the future!”

2014 Powerlifting Schedule

All of these young men are juniors and look forward to competing once again next year and challenging for the overall team title.

In all this season, Robinson powerlifters won three team championships and more than 40 individual medals.  It was a great season and the future is bright for all the young men and women who competed this spring.  We look forward to continued success next spring, when Robinson hosts the Region 2 Division 2 Powerlifting Championships.
